Sonia Gandhi — Biography, History and Facts

Sonia Gandhi is the president of Indian National Congress. She is the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who died in bomb explosion. She was born on 9 December 1946 in a small village of Italy named Barsano. She had her education in Cambridge University. During her college days she met Rajiv Gandhi who was then taking education for engineering. Rajiv fell in love with Sonia and married her in 1968. Two children Rahul and Priyanka were born of Sonia Gandhi.

Political Career and Effects

From the very beginning Sonia was a shy village girl. She was greatly hesitant in coming to the public and intermixing with the people. It was Indira Gandhi who tried to break her hesitation and brought her into the public life. Indira advised her not to be shy and coy so that she might not bring bad name to the family. The greatest tragedy fell on Sonia when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Perumbdur in 1991.

On the sympathy wave of Rajiv’s death, Congress came back to power and offered Prime Ministership to Sonia Gandhi. She refused to become PM at that time also. In 1996, after the defeat of the Congress in the election she was forced to take over the Congress party but she refused then ultimately given the weak condition of the Congress. She accepted the presidentship of the Congress.
When Sonia took over she stopped the liquidation of Congress and made it united. In 1999 , she fought election from Bellari, Karnataka and Amethi, U.P. and got elected from both seat. She made each and every effort to strengthened the Congress and energized its workers. She travelled 60,000 kilometers around India to spread the message of the Congress. The biggest challenge came to her when NDA Government decided to hold elections before six months of the term of the completion of Lok Sabha. She took the challenge with great patience and labored days to night to bring victory to the Congress.
Nobody believed her and laughed at her but she success and gave a stunning below to the opponents with Congress coming back to power in 2004. She rose to great heights of fame when she refused to become the PM and secured the place in the hearts of the people of India.
