The famous Golden Temple is located at Amritsar. It is also known as Hari Mandir on Darbar Sahib. This is the most sacred shrine of the Sikhs in India.

The golden glitter of the great shrine invites every devotee to the solemn hymns from the holy Granth Sahib. Thousands of devotees visit this shrine everyday and listen to the message “O frail being, I return to the path of the Divine and forsake materialistic pleasures. Your being represents Divine essence. Therefore, return to the Divine path which will bring bliss and glory to your soul. Why have you forsaken such a glorious path? Why have the earthly pleasures attracted you so much? Are you unware of the fact that all those that are born. Have to die one day. Seek your destiny through return to this immortal [path of spiritualism”.

The holy hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib symbolisting the above message blare forth through laud speakers and the devotees sit with rapt attention. Many of them are impressed and they start a spiritualistic carrier.

Guide to Visiting the Golden Temple

The temple stands in the middle of a sarovar (tank) which is known as the Amrit Kund. A marble path runs round the tank and a marble bridge leads to the temple. Lofty buildings stands round the path. The exquisite golden glitter of the dome which is constructed out of golden plates is highly enchanting to the human eye. The temple has four silver doors. The exterior glitter of the temple impresses every new visitors as if “gold and silver” were nothings a compared to the spiritual sermons of the holy Granth Sahib kept within the sacred shrine. The most important aspect is “An invitation to the human being to return to the glorious path of Spiritual Renaissance.” Every morning and evening, we can listen to these holy sermons which are recited by the high priest.

The Akal Takhat facing the shrine is a five storeyed building and it is separated from the latter by an open space.

To the south west stands a seven storeyed building ‘Baba Atal’. This building was built in memory of Atal Rai, the son of Guru Har Govind. It is the highest building in Amritsar.

Facts About the Golden Temple in Amritsar

Pilgrims are visited from all over the country on this holy shrine. Even the sight seers from all over the world visit this shrine and they are enchanted by the beauty of the buildings and the spiritual sermons emerging out of the shrine on the days of festival. On the Diwali day, the holy shrine presents a charming sight. The whole building is light up with thousands of lamps. The reflection of these building add the beauty of the sight.
